Modern wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves can provide a wonderfully warm and inviting focal point for your home. Designed to use fuel more efficiently than an open fire, the right stove can deliver excellent performance when it is carefully selected, professionally installed and used correctly.

Good burning practice is important too. Using suitable, dry fuel, following the manufacturer’s instructions and arranging regular chimney sweeping and maintenance will help your stove operate efficiently while reducing unnecessary smoke.

The whole of Oxford is now within a Smoke Control Area, but this does not automatically prevent you from having a wood-burning stove. Wood can still be used in a DEFRA-exempt appliance, provided the stove is operated using the approved fuel and instructions for that model.
